Washington tennis opens season with 4-1 win over Unioto

CHILLICOTHE — The Washington Lady Blue Lion tennis team, under the direction of first-year head coach Mitch Augenstein, opened the 2015 season with a match against Unioto Monday afternoon.

Washington won the match, 4-1.

The competition began at the Ohio University-Chillicothe courts, but, when the rains came, it was moved to the indoor facility at the Chillicothe Fitness and Racquet Club.

At first singles, Washington freshman Megan Downing defeated Unioto senior Macey Spencer, 6-1, 6-1.

At second singles, returning state-qualifier Anna Nestor, a junior, defeated Unioto’s Caroline King, a sophomore, 6-2, 6-1.

Washington sophomore Mackenzie Cress lost her third singles match, 2-6, 3-6. The opponent’s name was not available.

At first doubles, junior Sierra Dawson and sophomore Maria Pickerill teamed up to beat Michelle Kerns (sophomore) and Brianna McGuire (junior), 6-2, 6-0.

Washington’s Gretchen Milstead (junior) and Jen Richards (freshman) won their match by forfeit (6-0, 6-0).

There were no j-v matches as Unioto had just five players.

There are 14 members of the Washington 2015 tennis team.

Washington’s next match is the SCOL-opener today at Clinton-Massie.

Washington is at Chillicothe Wednesday for another SCOL match and at Logan Elm Saturday for a tournament beginning at 10 a.m.

The Lady Lions are at Waverly on Monday, Aug. 17 before hosting the 2015 home opener against East Clinton at the courts at Gardner Park Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 4:30 p.m.
