CHILLICOTHE — The Washington Blue Lion varsity baseball team opened the 2017 season with a game against Gallia Academy Saturday, March 25 at the VA Stadium in Chillicothe.

The game was part of the season-opening, week-long series of games at the storied venue.

Gallia Academy won the game, 4-3.

The Blue Lions had 10 hits to just three for Gallia Academy.

Conner Chrisman went 2 for 3 and Jarett Patton went 2 for 3 for the Blue Lions.

Gallia Academy scored one run in the first and two in the second.

Washington tied the game, 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth.

Gallia Academy scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the fifth inning.

Jarett Patton started on the mound for the Blue Lions. He pitched two innings with three hits and three runs (all earned) with one walk and one strikeout.

Nick Barrett pitched five innings with no hits, one run (earned) three walks and five strikeouts. He suffered the loss.

For Gallia Academy, J. Brumfield started and pitched 4.2 innings allowing eight hits, three runs (all earned) three walks and three strikeouts.

B. Thomas got the win for Gallia Academy. He pitched 2.1 innings with two hits, no runs, three walks and three strikeouts.

“We played pretty well,” Washington head coach Tyler Rhodus said. “We just couldn’t come up with a clutch hit when needed it in a couple of situations.

“Jarett started on the mound and Nick came on in relief in the third,” Rhodus said. “Nick pitched five no-hit innings and looked really good outside of one walk that turned into a run causing him to take the loss.

“The main difference was we walked the lead off hitter four of the first five innings,” Rhodus said. “We played great defense (no errors) and had 10 hits but still found ourselves on the wrong side.”
