MT wins wrestling tri-match with McClain, East Clinton

GREENFIELD — On a very cold Thursday night, wrestling teams from Miami Trace High School and East Clinton High School convened at McClain High School for an SCOL tri-match.

This is the final-ever year for the South Central Ohio League and Miami Trace, a perennial favorite, handily won both matches.

Miami Trace defeated host McClain, 56-15 and then beat East Clinton, 63-15.

Neither McClain, nor East Clinton had a full compliment of participants in all the weight classes.

Despite the rather one-sided victories, much is expected of wrestlers at Miami Trace.

“The good news is, it’s early in the season,” Miami Trace head coach Ben Fondale said. “We have a lot of things we have to fix. Our kids didn’t bring the intensity that we were hoping for. That’s the main thing.

“Our kids need to understand that we have a target on our backs,” Fondale said. “As far as, Miami Trace is the team to beat, year-in and year-out. Our kids need to expect that target on their backs.

“Our kids just have to get more mentally focused,” Fondale said. “We’re kind of a young team. We only had one senior (Jared Fenner) wrestling tonight. Our juniors need to step up. We have about seven juniors in the starting lineup. And they need to step and show some leadership.”

Having now taken two steps in defense of their SCOL title, Miami Trace will travel to Defiance Friday for the Fricker’s Duals.

Wrestling starts at 2 p.m. Friday and continues at 10 a.m. Saturday.
