The Miami Trace Lady Panthers opened the 2016-17 varsity basketball season with a solid 49-27 win over Benjamin Logan Saturday, Nov. 26.

Miami Trace junior Tanner Bryant was the game’s leading scorer with 13 points.

Junior Victoria Fliehman also reached double figures with 10 points. Fliehman led Miami Trace in rebounds with 10, including five on the offensive glass.

Senior Hanna Reisinger had eight points and freshman Shaylee McDonald scored eight points in her first varsity game. She scored two of Miami Trace’s three three-point field goals (the other was scored by Bryant).

Nikki Current led Ben Logan with eight points. Coreen Crosby scored six.

Ben Logan led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Miami Trace outscored Ben Logan 38-14 in the final three quarters.

“Once we got past the first-game jitters and our kids slowed down a little bit, our defense was very effective,” Miami Trace head coach Ben Ackley said. “Our pressure out front gave Ben Logan a lot of trouble.

“They’re a real nice team,” Ackley said. “They return a girl, just a junior, who only needed 11 points to reach 1,000 for her career (Current). We held her to eight points. She was 4 of 21 from the floor. Our guards did a very good job of pressuring her and making her earn everything she got.

“We were up four at halftime,” Ackley said. “In the second half, mid-way through the third quarter, we put a big run on them. That was good, because we got a lot of kids playing time. It’ll help our bench. I don’t think we had one kid play over 25 minutes.

“We played nine and no one took more than nine shots,” Ackley said. “Everything was very balanced. We have so many different kids who can do so many different things. It’s going to be tough for our opponents to isolate on one or two kids.

“We were proud of our defensive effort and how hard the kids fought and the way they responded in the second half,” Ackley said.

Miami Trace won the j-v game Saturday, 37-30.

Miami Trace will host Circleville Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
