Growing up I loved those times when we would have family gatherings. All of our relatives would come together and we would have a feast, laugh, play and have fun. I have had a lot of good things happen in my life but those family gatherings are etched in my mind as much as any good thing I can remember.
My great-grandpa even built a fenced in park with a grill and picnic tables where we could have summer picnics. For Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve we would go to grandma’s house, gather around the table and have a feast with more food than we could ever eat.
Now that we have grandchildren, my wife will have our family in for Sunday dinner and memories are being etched in their minds, as they were in mine. It is a good thing to carry on those traditions, handing them down from generation to generation because relationships are developed through them. There were some of our family members that lived out of our area and the only time I saw them was at a family gathering. If those times would not have happened I might have known their name, but I would not have known them.
Just being related to someone is not having a relationship with them. Relationships are something that we have to be present to develop. It is something that takes time and effort to accomplish. If we are never with someone, we cannot build a lasting relationship with them.
How many long distance relationship can stand the test of time if we are never in each other’s presence? Can you be home every day and yet not be present with your family who lives in the same house? How much effort are we willing to give to relationships that will be etched in our minds and the minds of our children? How can they pass down what they do not have?
These and other life questions will be addressed Sunday morning as “The Gathering Place Family” meets at 240 Courthouse Parkway for Bible Study at 9:30 and in the lobby at 10 a.m. for our Pre-Service Connection where we enjoy coffee, juice and donuts. Our Worship Service and Children’s Church then begins at 10:30. Come at 7 p.m. and be part of our Wednesday night Bible Study and Children’s Ministry.
