If you were a child in the 50’s as I was, you probably had a set of building blocks. The blocks we had were all the same shape and size with numbers and letters on them. You could stack them up to spell words or put them in numerical order. They were a perfect square and had some grooves in them to make them stay in line as you stacked them.

People working together in a community are very much like those building blocks. We can be placed in order so that we make sense, however we are not all alike. We are not all perfect square with grooves to make us stack up straight.

We are very different in our talents and abilities. In relation to the building blocks, some of us might be square but others might be round. There are others that might be triangles or rectangles. If you try to stack a triangle in with the square blocks it seems impossible. Or is it?

When I was involved in construction, I faced a fire place with flagstone. When the stones were delivered they were all shapes and sizes. We would work to find stones that could be mortared together to make a straight front. Sometimes we would have to break the stones to make them work but the mortar would fill in the differences in the various shaped stones.

Could it be that even though we are all different, there is mortar, so to speak, that can make us all fit together? Is it possible to find out what that mortar is and apply it to our lives to fill in the differences? Could the hard times we experience just be a breaking that we need to be able to fill our position in life?

These and other life questions will be addressed Sunday morning as “The Gathering Place Family” meets in the Washington High School Gymnasium at 10 a.m. for our Pre-Service Connection where we enjoy coffee, juice and donuts. Our Worship Service and Children’s Church then begins at 10:30.
