Luck is a common word among people that frequent gambling facilities.

It is the roll of the dice, the draw of the cards, or the spin of the wheel. Those who experience winnings are said to be lucky. I have even heard of some gamblers, who seem to win more than usual, being nicknamed “Lucky.” Those people would appear to have good luck.

Then there are those that seem to have no good luck at all. They seem to lose every bet they make. They attempt to win time and again but it seems that it always turns out wrong for them. They are said to have bad luck.

There was a song written that had a phrase in it which started: “If it weren’t for bad luck, I would have no luck at all.”

If time is true, then we have no say in the matter of winning or losing in life. We are, in some way, held captive by the forces of luck. This way of thinking would lead us to believe, that in some way, luck has made our life choices for us and we are dumb to the outcome. Many of us just go on living and believing that life is a matter of “Dumb Luck.”

If life is truly a matter of “Dumb Luck,” is it possible to have any other forces at work in our life? Can we know that statistical probability of something happening? Is living on statistical probability the same thing as living by “Dumb Luck?” Could it be possible that we have the ability to know the right or wrong thing to do? Would this knowledge of right and wrong take the “Dumb Luck” factor out of our lives?

These and other life questions will be addressed Sunday morning as “The Gathering Place Family” meets in the Washington High School Gymnasium at 10 a.m. for our Pre-Service Connection where we enjoy coffee, juice and donuts. Our Worship Service and Children’s Church then begins at 10:30.
