Local Board of DD receives award

Each year, the Coordinating Center of Excellence in Mental Illness/Developmental Disability (CCOE) at Wright State University and Ohio’s Telepsychiatry Project for Intellectual Disability recognizes counties in the state of Ohio that have excelled in the area of provision of services and resources to individuals with developmental disabilities co-occurring with a mental illness. The accomplishments may include educational programming, collaborative efforts among systems, coordinating specialized clinical services, or other administrative and leadership activities.

This year, the Fayette County Board of Developmental Disabilities received the honor of this award presented at the 14th-annual National Association for Dual Diagnosis Conference held in Columbus this past week. Attending the conference to receive this award was a team of Fayette DD’s finest.

The Telepsychiatry Project was initiated several years ago by the Fayette DD nurse, Jan Cobb, in conjunction with the services and support (SSA) director Renee Guess and her staff with technology support provided by Tony Clay.

The Telepsychiatry Project links people needing psychiatric services with a psychiatrist through technology. This link supports the person being served and the staff providing the local service with the best treatment options available. Over time, the project has saved countless hours of travel time and expense while providing access to services not available locally.

Cathie Rippeth, an SSA for Fayette DD whose caseload contains 10 people who benefit from this service, said, “Telepsychiatry is a must have for the folks I serve. Telepsychiatry professionals practice a team approach, utilizing trauma informed care and good life principles to develop a service plan that treats the entire person.”

When presented with the award the team heard the following, “We are inspired by your team, and your county is without question a model for others.”
