The Washington Court House City School Board of Education voted Monday evening to grant permission to a few residents of the community to hold a benefit concert for a recent cancer victim and long-time district friend.

Buck and Randy Caulley and Mariann Wright requested the use of the Historic Middle School Auditorium through an agenda item at the monthly meeting of the board. The trio wanted to hold a benefit concert on Sunday, Oct. 16 with proceeds going to the family of Danny Lee Lowe to help with medical expenses. The board approved the request with a unanimous vote.

According to Wright, more details, including participants, ways to donate and a time for the event, will be reported as the group finalizes all of these decisions.

Lowe, 59, of Washington Court House, passed away Sept. 18 following a five-month battle with cancer. He was born June 2, 1957, in Columbus, to Virgil Ellis and Wanda Aileen Smith Lowe, and was a 1975 graduate of Miami Trace High School, as well as a lifelong resident of this community.

“I knew Danny very well,” board president Ken Upthegrove said during the meeting Monday. “He was a great man and very selfless. He would give you the shirt off of his back. I first knew Danny in the construction trades when I worked in it, he and his dad owned the crane business. From there he started working for the school districts and we were always very impressed. He started with the lights about 1985, after he had already been doing sounds for a few years. So he easily worked with the district for 30 years.”

Lowe and his father formerly owned Lowe’s Crane and Lowe’s Welding, but he could be recognized for his personal business he owned and operated, Lowe Lighting & Sound, which served the community for over 40 years. Lowe provided sound, lighting and other services to schools, churches, fairgrounds and theaters across the state of Ohio. Whether for a pep rally, school musical, church production or more, Lowe could be spotted surrounded by his sound board and the rest of his equipment adding extra flare to any event he took on.
