Matthew Bruns, 39, of Cedarville, was injured in an accident Sunday morning when he struck an Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser with his motorcycle on U.S. 62, north of Washington Court House.

According to Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Stan Jordan, at about 7:41 a.m. an Ohio State Patrol cruiser with the Wilmington Post, driven by Sgt. Rodney Murphy, traveled south on U.S. 62. As he approached Bloomingburg New Holland Road, Sgt. Murphy checked the speed of a vehicle in the northbound lane.

After he had decided to stop the vehicle, Sgt. Murphy slowed down near the intersection and started to use Bloomingburg New Holland Road to perform a U-Turn, according to Jordan. As his vehicle went sideways on the road, the motorcycle driven by Bruns had come up behind him and struck the cruiser just in front of the driver side door.

“The motorcyclist was perfectly squared and went straight into the side of the cruiser,” Jordan said. “He was ejected and traveled over top of the hood and landed on the other side of the car. He was wearing a helmet and as far as his injuries, there was nothing life-threatening about them. He did, I believe, suffer a broken arm and some shoulder problems, which are still to be determined. The cruiser was damaged and the officer is a little shook up, but he is not hurt physically.”

According to Jordan, Bruns was transported from the scene by the Fayette County EMS to Fayette County Memorial Hospital and was then flown to OSU Wexner Medical Center. Jordan said that to his knowledge, Bruns was still in the hospital as of about 1 p.m. Monday, but reportedly Bruns left the scene awake and talking with authorities.

Jordan said that the officer was wearing his seat belt. The accident caused damage to the wheel and potentially damaged the undercarriage and front end linkage, in addition to a dent. The incident is still under investigation by an Ohio State Patrol crash reconstruction unit. BPM Joint-Fire District and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call and assisted on the scene.
