County prepares to party

Fayette County will celebrate the Fourth of July with a variety of parties, parades and firework displays throughout the weekend.

The Washington C.H. Fire In The Sky firework display will be held at the fairgrounds on Sunday at about 10 p.m. Dan Fowler, chairman of Fire In The Sky, took time on Thursday to thank the many donors who help to make sure the display continues. He said that coming and watching the fireworks is coming to support the veterans that helped to get us here.

“The shirts this year say, ‘Thank a veteran,’ and we hope that the community takes time to do that,” Fowler said. “We always want to thank our donors. Without them we would be lost. We just couldn’t do it without their support and we hope that it continues. Otherwise, everything is there, ready to be set up, and then we wait until Sunday.”

Beginning on Saturday, the Jeffersonville Athletic Association will begin its Fourth of July baseball tournament with 12 teams currently signed up to participate. The games will begin at 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, and the last game will start at 5 p.m. on both days. All games will be held at the Jeffersonville ball fields with concessions available for the duration. Currently, the association is working on additional games that could be played on Monday, if they get responses from several softball teams.

“We have five for the minor league and seven for the major league that will participate this weekend,” Jeannine Whiteside, representative for the association, said during an interview Thursday. “We have one minor and one major team participating from Jeffersonville. Otherwise we have had several teams call to get in the tournament, and I believe we have teams coming from Jamestown, Springfield and Circleville. We hope the community will come out and enjoy the games and concessions all weekend long.”

On Monday, Jeffersonville will hold a parade at 7 p.m. The Jeffersonville Community Pool, in conjunction with its sponsor, the Jeffersonville Festival Association, will be hosting a “Swimming Pool Block Party” from 8 until 11 p.m. The cost is $5 per person and that includes admission to the pool, a hot dog, bag of chips and a drink. DJ Larry Detty will be there with carnival games.

Please bring your own chairs and blankets. Coolers will not be permitted. The fireworks, sponsored by the Jeffersonville Lions Club, will be set off in the evening at dusk around 9:30 p.m.
