Fire up the grill, May is Ohio Beef Month

0

May 1 marked the start of Ohio Beef Month, an initiative by the state’s beef farming community that celebrates nutritious, delicious Ohio-raised beef.

Ohio is home to nearly 17,000 beef farming families who are committed to providing excellent care for their animals, protecting the environment and producing safe, healthy beef. They raise approximately 1.24 million cattle annually, which equals more than 437 million pounds of beef each year, making the beef farming practice an integral part of Ohio’s agriculture industry.

In honor of Ohio Beef Month, the Ohio Beef Council and Ohio’s beef farming families are teaming up to encourage Ohioans to incorporate beef into a well-balanced diet. According to dietary guidelines, adults should eat approximately 5.5 ounces of protein-rich foods each day. Beef is a natural source of essential nutrients, which makes it a great protein source Americans can enjoy daily.

Ohio’s beef farmers are challenging fellow Ohioans to celebrate Beef Month by participating in the 30-Day Protein Challenge, a step-by-step program that incorporates protein into all three daily meals. Participants are encouraged to enjoy lean, high-protein foods like beef more regularly.

By visiting BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com/ProteinChallenge participants can join and access valuable tools, including recipes, tips and goals.

Beef Month also kicks off grilling season – a beef farmer’s favorite time of the year. The Ohio Beef Council will be sharing guidelines on how to select, marinate and cook different cuts of beef. They also have expert advice on how to save money when buying beef. Visit BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com to learn more about cooking with beef.

The Ohio Beef Council will also be hosting a photo contest open to both beef farmers and the public. Contestants are invited to upload a photo to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram of someone cooking or eating beef using the hashtag #OhioBeef. Two winners will be selected at the end of each week; one beef farmer and one beef consumer. The winning producer will be awarded a new pair of new boots, and the winning consumer will be awarded a pair of Cheeseburger Chuck Taylors.
