CAC to host local rally for students

As the annual “We Are the Majority Rally” is being held virtually this year, Fayette County Prevention Coalition will be hosting an in-person rally that local students are invited to attend.

The local rally will be held on Friday, May 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Commission on Aging Building, 119 S. Elm St. in Washington Court House.

According to Heidi Arrington, the DFC coordinator at the Fayette County Community Action Commission, “We Are The Majority Rally” is a youth-led movement celebrating the fact that the majority of youth do not misuse alcohol, tobacco or other drugs, and it shares messages of hope, inspiration and solidarity with youth across Ohio.

Typically, the rally is held at the Ohio Statehouse. As the rally was made virtual this year, this is the first year there will be a local rally held. The local event will include pizza, soda pop and water.

There is no cost for students to attend. As for parents or guardians, those who are interested in attending the event can contact event officials to be parent volunteers. Otherwise, parents can drop off the students.

“We’ll take good care of them. We will be practicing safe social distancing, wearing masks and taking temperatures before entry,” explained Arrington via email. “We’ll have several CAC employees and several of our Fayette County Prevention Coalition members at this event to supervise.”

In order to attend, an RSVP and permission slip must be turned in. According to Arrington, flyers with permission slips will be distributed to local schools. Parents can also request one via the Community Action Commission website, www.cacfayettecounty.org/contact-us/, or by email at [email protected].

Flyers are also available in the CAC main office lobby located at 1400 US Highway 22 N.W. in Washington C.H.

Funding for the rally is provided by Paint Valley ADAMH Board and Ohio MHAS’s State Opioid Response Grant, according to Arrington. The use of the space for the event is being donated by the Commission on Aging.

“We hope that this year’s ‘We Are The Majority Rally’ will bring additional youth to the coalition. We support the belief that, for community change to occur, we need youth as the leaders of today, not tomorrow. The youth are working on a t-shirt fundraiser that will allow us to continue activities through the summer months,” wrote Arrington.
