DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Ohioans whose houses were damaged by tornadoes this spring are getting more time to apply for property tax relief because the deadline has been extended until the end of September.

In Dayton and surrounding Montgomery County, a Memorial Day tornado outbreak damaged or destroyed numerous homes and businesses and injured hundreds.

The county has received more than 750 applications for property tax relief. But county Auditor Karl Keith tells the Dayton Daily News as many as 2,200 properties with major or moderate damage could be eligible.

The National Weather Service says one of the approximately 18 tornadoes that tore through the area over Memorial Day was the strongest in the state since 2010.
