The Green Corn Ceremony and Festival is happening again this year in Chillicothe.

The ceremony and festival will start at 11 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3. It is being held at Yoctangee Park under the “Big Lion’s Shelter,” according to the event coordinator, Chief Richard Haithcock.

Haithcock was once a local as he graduated from Washington High School, and he invites the community to join him for the festivities.

The event is being sponsored by the Saponi-Catawba Nation along with members of the Saponi Nation of Ohio, New River Catawba, the Tutelo Nahyssan Tribal Nation, Saponi of Carr’s Run and the Occaneechie Band of the Saponi Nation.

Professor Tom Klatka is the guest of honor and the host is Drum Okandada.

Participants are asked to bring their favorite corn dish and a buffet plate as a feast of green corn dishes will be occurring.

There will be ceremonial activities that include singing, dancing and drumming.
