Greenfield arson being investigated

The state fire marshal’s office is seeking information on a suspected arson that occurred in Greenfield last month.

According to a news release issued last week, the fire marshal’s Fire and Explosion Investigation Bureau is seeking tips regarding what it described as an intentionally set structure fire at 135 S. Washington St. in Greenfield.

“The fire occurred inside the interior office area of the structure at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 29,” the release said. “No one was injured in the accident.”

According to the release, a reward of up to $5,000 is being offered by the Blue Ribbon Arson Committee for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the fire.

Brian Bohnert, a public information officer with the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of the State Fire Marshal, said since there is an ongoing investigation into the blaze, he could not release more information than what was contained in the press release.

Regarding the severity of the damage, Bohnert said state investigators “don’t have the training” to determine how badly a property is damaged.

Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District Public Information Officer Lt. Branden Jackman said the district cannot comment on the matter.

According to the release, those with information on the fire should contact the fire marshal’s office tip line at 800-589-2728.

“Anything the public can do, any information anyone might have is important,” Bohnert said. “We absolutely encourage anyone who knows something to call our tip line and come forward.”
