Wilmington PD pursuit times two

WILMINGTON — A deputy attempted to stop a car on Rombach Avenue at 5:36 p.m. Saturday for a fictitious license plate, leading to a high-speed chase as the suspect sped away “weaving in and out of traffic, driving on the sidewalk” and almost causing “several accidents”, according to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office report.

The car — a small, black, older model two-door Honda Del Sol with Ohio license number FTN4569 — was confirmed to have fictitious plates, according to the CCSO report.

Wilmington Police Department units assisted with the pursuit. According to the WPD incident report, an officer attempted to disable the suspect vehicle using stop sticks near Point Park on East Main Street, but was unsuccessful. WPD continued the pursuit until the suspect vehicle left the city.

CCSO deputies chased the vehicle but lost sight of it around Mitchell Road, with another deputy soon after spotting the suspect vehicle on westbound Ohio 73, according to CCSO Lt. Mike Kassinos.

However, due to heavy traffic and safety concerns, the CCSO had to give up the chase, he said.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol as well as Warren County police personnel were advised to be on the lookout.

OSHP cars nearby were involved in a heavy traffic backup on I-71, according to the report.

Car thief nabbed

Wilmington police nabbed a man they were pursuing who allegedly stole a car in Sabina last week. But the department lost one if its cruisers to a fire in the process.

On Tuesday, Oct. 9, WPD observed a vehicle matching the description of a stolen vehicle reported out of Sabina.

“Officers followed the vehicle ‘til they had adequate officers for a felony car stop,” said WPD Chief Duane Weyand. “Upon stopping the vehicle, the driver fled southbound on South Street and eventually ran the vehicle out of gas and took off on foot. Officers pulled into the field and apprehended the subject after a short foot chase.”

He said WPD arrested Michael Carson, 32 of Midland.

However, while officers were dealing with Carson, “they looked back and saw one of the cruisers that was driven into the field on fire,” said Weyand. “The cause of the fire is undetermined.”

Carson was charged with felony theft and taken to the county jail. Additional charges will be filed, Weyand said.
