YMCA invites community to upcoming events

The Fayette County Family YMCA is encouraging the community to participate in two upcoming events.

The first event is the third-annual 5k Color Run. The run will be held on Saturday, May 19 at the Washington Court House city reservoir next to the YMCA. This event is a family fun event and individuals can choose to run or walk around the reservoir up to three laps, with each lap equaling a mile. While traveling around the reservoir, volunteers will be tossing a variety of neon colors onto all participants. After the race, participants can enjoy water and healthy snacks.

Individuals who register by May 6 will receive “race swag.” This includes a color packet, shirt, sunglasses and bag. Pre-registration is available for $20 and registration on the day of the race is $25. Anyone who registers after May 6 is not guaranteed any of the above items. Families pay one full registration with additional family members receiving a $5 discount. Family refers to one household.

“Our Color Run is a fantastic family fun activity that we are encouraging all parents and children of the community to participate in,” Kalyn Alkire, Aquatics, Youth and Family Director at the YMCA, said. “This is a unique opportunity for a parent and child to interact in a healthy exercise. Our 5k Color Run/Walk will allow our families to enjoy the outdoor scenery around the reservoir after a long winter.”

The second event is the Kid’s Triathlon on Saturday, June 16 at 8 a.m. This is the first year the YMCA is holding this event. Currently organizers have three age groups: second and third graders; fourth through sixth graders; and a long course option for fourth grade students through high school seniors. Participants must be able to swim at least 50 yards. The race will start by swimming at the YMCA pool, continue with a running course around the facility, and will finish by biking up at the Washington Court House city reservoir. This event is not timed and all finishers will receive a race medal.

The registration fee is $10 for the triathlon, which includes a shirt, and participants must register by June 4. For more information about either event, visit www.faycoymca.org or call the Fayette County Family YMCA at (740) 335-0477.
