A Chillicothe man who allegedly eluded Highland County officers after a $35,000 theft was reported in Bainbridge appeared in Fayette County court Monday.

Dustin L. Combs, 23, was arrested Aug. 2 by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office at the Baymont Inn in Jeffersonville. He is being held in the Fayette County Jail on charges of aggravated trafficking in drugs, a second-degree felony, and aggravated possession of drugs, a second-degree felony, with a $25,000 cash only bond.

Combs was scheduled for a final pretrial Monday in the Fayette County Court of Common Pleas on the two charges. His appointed public defense attorney, Kristina Oesterle, filed a motion to withdraw as counsel in the case, according to records. Combs’s trial date is Oct. 24.

Combs allegedly had a briefcase at the hotel that contained more than $5,938 and “a large amount of shards/clear crystal substance was located inside the bag and a digital scale,” according to reports. The substance tested positive for methamphetamine, reports said.

The Highland County Sheriff’s Office reported two burglaries on Beaver Road and US 50 near Bainbridge July 28. Reports said handguns, rifles, shotguns, and $35,000 cash were removed from a residence on US 50. On Beaver Road that same day, a Remmington .22 caliber rifle, a H&R .410 gauge shotgun, Savage Model M220 single shot shotgun, a John Deere backhoe, UTV, and zero-turn mower were reported stolen.

Reports said Combs purchased a blue car in Greenfield the next day, July 29, and allegedly paid with banded $100 bills, similar to the banded bills reported stolen from the residence in Bainbridge, reports said.

The Highland County Sheriff’s Office reportedly located the blue car Aug. 2 in Greenfield but the car fled toward Ross County. Fayette County deputies were notified and later located the suspect vehicle in the lot at the Baymont Inn in Jeffersonville. The vehicle, reports said, was disabled by the sheriff’s office to prevent another pursuit. Reports said Combs and two men from Greenfield then got into a Cadillac and attempted to leave the lot, but the deputies blocked the car. Combs was arrested on an active warrant, reports said. The two men who were with Combs, including the driver of the Cadillac, were released.

FCSO reportedly obtained search warrants for a black briefcase found in the Cadillac that had been seen with Combs, and for room 201 at the Baymont Inn.

The Highland County Sheriff’s Office assisted with executing the search warrant, reports said. Two handguns – a Kel-Tec PMR30, semi-auto pistol and a Ruger Mark II semi-auto pistol – a black pistol case, set of keys, gold jewelry, lottery tickets, bullets, and tools were allegedly found in the room. The room was reportedly rented in the name of the Cadillac driver from Greenfield, Richard Campbell. Some of the firearms matched the descriptions of firearms reported stolen in Highland County, reports said.

When Combs was processed into the Fayette County Jail, reports said he informed deputies that he had $1,000 in the sole of his tennis shoe.
