The Washington High School graduating class of 1951 held its 66th class reunion on Aug. 12 at the Staunton Fellowship Hall.

Registration was at 12:30 p.m. The master of ceremonies, Dick Hughes, welcomed everyone. Invocation was by president Sharon Vincent. Vincent also blew out the 84 candles on the birthday cake and opened the birthday card, which played the birthday song and all sang along with it. The class also had the 66th reunion candles, which she blew out. The buffet was catered by Sarah Matter.

After the meal, the class held a memorial service for their classmates and their teacher, Marjorie Pensyl, who have passed away. The classmates who came to the reunion were thanked for attending. They had 35 register, but at the last minute four were unable to attend.

The master of ceremonies read off a list of classmates who were unable to attend but they sent their hellos and regrets. The class had a contest for each member to read and test their memory. Most of the members knew all the answers. Their reward was a gold foil covered chocolate dollar. Their other souvenir was the booklet with information on classmates with a list of the deceased members and teachers. They also received a blue ink pen with the “Class of 1951” imprinted on the side.

Hughes also gave each a raffle ticket and whoever won received a lottery ticket.

On the memorabilia table there were photos of previous reunions, albums, and other older photos for members to view. There was literature on the new high school and the apartments at the old high school.

The class had patriotic decorations with blue tablecloths, white lacy dollies placements with the number 51 printed in the middle in blue ink. The color scheme is always the school colors, blue and white, and their class flower is the red American beauty rose. They had blue lit paper lanterns hung from the ceiling over each table. On the table were silver, red, white and blue streamers down the middle of each table. They had blue sparkly vases on each table and the silver vase with red roses on the speaker’s table.

Several members told of their grandchildren and how many great grandchildren they have. Others told of their life and hobbies. The class then had their pictures taken. After the photo was taken, Norman Merritt announced that he had 300 ears of sweet corn for whoever wanted to take some home.
