Detty’s Market in Jeffersonville sold to Winner family

The Ohio-based Winner family said Tuesday they acquired ownership of Detty’s Market in Jeffersonville.

The Detty family incorporated the Fayette County grocery store in 1984 and ran the business until this week when it was sold for an undisclosed price. Terms of the sale have not been released to the public.

The Winner family owns three other small grocery stores in Lake View, North Ridge, and Mechanicsburg, Ohio.

“I’ve known Jeff (Detty) for quite awhile,” said Brad Winner, who officially took ownership of the store Tuesday. The families are united through suppliers, said Brad, and are members of the Ohio Grocer’s Association.

The Detty family reportedly “felt that it was time” to sell the family business but in doing so they were careful about who they selected to take over the store, said Brad.

“The Dettys wanted to make sure they sold it to someone they approved of,” said Brad.

“So it’s family-and-locally-owned,” added Brad’s wife, Jackie.

Jackie was in the store Tuesday working to transition billing, payment and vendor information. For now the family said they plan to keep the store just as it is.

“Mixing our knowledge and experience with the Detty family’s knowledge and experience, we believe we can serve the community well,” said Jackie.

On his first day at the Jeffersonville store, Jackie and Brad’s 24-year-old son Cole was stocking shelves, meeting with some of the store’s 40 or so vendors, and making lists.

Cole said he had the opportunity to meet the Detty family Monday.

“The Detty family treated us like we’re actually a part of their family, too,” said Cole. “They’re a great family.”

Cole said he graduated college last year with a degree in economics and has been working in the business for about 10 years. His dad Brad has been involved in the grocery store business since 1986. Brad and Jackie said they have two more sons who will be helping with the family grocery business in the near future.

“We enjoy being in the small communities. The people are down-to-earth. We enjoy being a part of the community,” said Jackie.

The family said they plan to eventually address the community’s needs and make some changes to the store at a later time.

Jeffersonville is a rural village in Fayette County with a population of less than 2,000 residents.

The Record-Herald will provide more information on the Detty’s Market story as it becomes available.
