New Vienna man allegedly made bomb threats against Washington High School to spend time with juvenile

Two bomb threats against the Washington C.H. City Schools this year were made by a 46-year-old New Vienna man in an effort to close the high school so he could spend time with a 17-year-old male student with whom he was sexually involved, police allege.

Brian D. Tedrick was arrested in New Vienna Wednesday morning by the U.S. Marshals Service at the request of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. A Fayette County grand jury recently indicted Tedrick on more than 40 felony counts.

Police have been investigating calls threatening to “blow up the school” made the mornings of Jan. 13 and April 20. A major break in the case came May 11 when officers were informed that Tedrick had been having sex with a Washington High School student, according to Washington Police Chief Brian Hottinger.

During an interview with police, the student said he’s been sexually involved with Tedrick since he was 15-years-old and that Tedrick provided him drugs and alcohol in exchange for sexual acts, reports said.

The student informed police that on Jan. 12, Tedrick told him that he “would not be having school the next day but the juvenile wasn’t sure what he meant,” reports said.

Calls came into the Washington Police Department during the early morning hours Jan. 13 threatening to “blow up your high school with four pipe bombs.” Authorities found no pipe bombs at Washington C.H. City Schools, Miami Trace Local Schools or Fayette Christian School. All schools closed that day.

The juvenile also told police that the more recent bomb threat on April 20 was also called in by Tedrick in order for the two of them to “spend the day together getting high.”

The morning of the April 20 bomb threat, Tedrick used the “TextNow” app while he and the juvenile were sitting in the parking lot of the high school, according to police. The free app works by using text and voice over internet technology. Tedrick utilized the app and voice changer to call Washington High School and the Washington Police Department, once again threatening to “blow up” the high school.

The Washington High School/Middle School campus was on lockdown the morning of April 20 until after authorities conducted a perimeter and interior search of the buildings. Again, nothing was found. Following the search, Robert Hamm, the interim superintendent at the time, made the decision to continue with classes throughout the day.

When police interviewed the juvenile about the bomb threats and his relationship with Tedrick, the juvenile gave officers access to his Facebook Messenger messages. According to police, Facebook Messenger revealed conversations with Tedrick, who told the juvenile he wanted to marry him.

The conversations also included remarks about various drugs, meeting places and sexually explicit comments. Tedrick allegedly sent a picture of his genitals to the juvenile, police said.

“By virtue of the information we received from the juvenile, detective Tom Queen and detective Colt Sever were able to arrange a meeting with the suspect,” said Hottinger. “The suspect was taken into custody, his vehicle was impounded and his phone was seized. During his interview with detectives, he confessed to the sex offenses as well as the bomb threats. He was disrupting public services for a twisted reason.”

Tedrick, of 10868 Mad River Road, is facing two counts of inducing panic, two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, seven counts of corrupting another with drugs (second-degree felonies), four counts of corrupting another with drugs (third-degree felonies), 16 counts of corrupting another with drugs (fourth-degree felonies), and 16 counts of compelling prostitution.

Tedrick will be arraigned in Fayette County Common Pleas Court Monday, June 12 at 1 p.m. He is currently being held in the Fayette County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
