A Ross County man accused of fatally shooting two people in west Columbus was arrested in Fayette County early Sunday morning.

According to Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth, the Columbus Police Department alerted his office to the reported double homicide earlier Sunday morning and provided the identity of a person of interest. Columbus police indicated that during the course of their investigation, information was received that the person of interest, identified as John C. Henry, 48, of Clarksburg, was possibly traveling to the Deer Creek area.

Law enforcement agencies surrounding the Deer Creek area were alerted to be on the lookout for a red Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by Henry.

At approximately 4:15 a.m., the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a resident in the Leslie Trace area reporting that Henry was in a vehicle in the driveway of a residence and in possession of a firearm, according to Stanforth. Henry was also reportedly requesting that a family member come out of the residence and speak with him.

Deputies responded to the area and telephone contact was made with the Leslie Trace caller. “After a period of negotiation, Henry surrendered the firearm and was taken into custody by deputies without incident and detained for the Columbus Police Department,” Stanforth said.

Sheriff’s detectives from Fayette County secured evidence for the Columbus Police Department during the investigation. Henry was transported to the Fayette County Jail, and was later returned to Franklin County to face murder charges.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, Henry is accused of killing a woman he had been romantically linked with and a man who was an unintended target. Nicole L. Caudill, 43, and Timothy L. Carney, 53, were pronounced dead by Columbus fire paramedics at 1:47 a.m. Sunday in the basement of a Hilltop home in Columbus. Both suffered gunshot wounds.

There were four or five others inside the house when the shooting occurred, the Dispatch reported.
