Country Cooking with Lou Ann: Cavatini

0

Hello! This is a casserole dish that I have made for many years. I ran across it in an old cookbook and decided to give it a try. My family loved it, my son, Dustin, requested this often.

This recipe makes a lot. I have sometimes just cut the recipe in half but even when I make the full recipe, it’s never wasted.

I usually serve it with some garlic bread and a salad. It’s another comfort meal for us.

Cavatini

-1 lb ground beef (I use 96 percent lean)

-1 lb ground Italian sausage

-1 medium onion, chopped

-3, 1/2 oz mini pepperonis

-1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes

-26, 1/2 oz spaghetti sauce

-16 oz package of sausage, sliced (I like the turkey sausage in the ring)

-4 oz fresh mushroom, sliced

-16 oz shell macaroni

-16 oz mozzarella cheese

First, cook ground beef and ground sausage together until browned, add onions and peppers and cook until tender. Then Cook shell macaroni until almost done, drain.

In a large bowl, add sliced sausage, crushed tomatoes, pepperoni, spaghetti sauce, sliced mushrooms, meat mixture and macaroni. Mix well. Put in a large baking dish and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes covered.

Add 16 oz mozzarella cheese to the top and bake another 15 minutes uncovered. Enjoy!
