On Monday, the City of Washington Court House Tree Committee celebrated Arbor Day by the Judy Chapel at Washington Cemetery.
National Arbor Day is celebrated the final Friday in April; however, many states observe Arbor Day on different dates throughout the year based on the best tree planting season for their area, according to www.arborday.org/.
The city would have celebrated in April as well, but the celebration was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
During the celebration, the tree committee honored Washington Garden Club and Fayette Garden Club for their many years of dedication and love of preservation and beautification of Washington Court House and Fayette County.
In honor of Arbor Day and both clubs, two White Fringe Trees (Chionanthus Virginicus), also known as “Old Man’s Beard,” were planted by the Judy Chapel. Special dedication plaques will be posted by both trees.
The histories and legacies of both garden clubs within the community, as well as a photo and history of the White Fringe Tree, were presented by Don Creamer, urban forester.
Ted Hawk, city council member and tree committee representative, read a proclamation regarding the history of Arbor Day and its commencement.
Many members of the tree committee, Washington City Manager Joe Denen, city council chairperson Jim Chrisman, Brigette Hisey of Soil and Water, and Kelley Ford of the City of Washington Court House, were present in celebrating both honorees.
