The Washington High School junior-varsity and varsity volleyball teams opened the 2019 season at home Monday evening against the Waverly Tigers.

In the j-v match, Washington won, two sets to one. The scores were: 29-27, 19-25 and 25-22.

In the varsity match, Waverly defeated Washington, 3-0. Those scores were: 25-17, 25-12 and 25-21.

Statistically for Washington, Rayana Burns led the team with eight kills. Mallory Hicks had four kills and Brittney Wilson added three.

In serving, Burns, Hicks and Mackenzie Truex each had one ace.

For digs, Olivia Wayne had six, Burns had six and Wilson tallied four.

Emily Semler had two solo blocks; Rachel Palmer had two block assists and Burns had two block assists.

“We had to adjust our lineup there,” Washington head coach Ashley DeAtley said. “We wanted to get some more aggressive attacks in the front row.

“We were struggling, defensively, so we made a couple of changes there,” DeAtley said.

Serving was not kind to Washington in the season-opener.

“We had a hard time keeping our serves in,” DeAtley said. “We missed so many serves tonight. We’ll work on that in practice tomorrow.

“Minimizing our errors will be our focus this week,” DeAtley said.

Washington will return to action Saturday at home against former SCOL opponets Wilmington. The j-v match starts at 10 a.m. with the varsity match to follow.
