Garage sales represent summer almost as much as ball games, picnics, and swimming pools opening on Memorial Day; and Altrusa International of Washington C.H. has traditionally counted on its single garage/bake sale to pay for one of the club’s scholarships.
These have always been awarded to female graduates from Fayette County’s two public high schools.
Starting this year, however, president Elaine Crutcher has encouraged the club to award a $600 scholarship also to a graduate from Fayette Christian School. And thanks to the generosity of its patrons—donating their change or even an extra dollar or more—this past weekend’s garage/bake sale succeeded in meeting its target.
The annual Loving Spoonsful tasting luncheon, scheduled for Oct. 19 at the Commission on Aging, will be the other major fundraiser of an organization with the worthy goal of “Leading to a Better Community.” That fundraiser has since 2011 supported at least one local scholarship as well as several major projects, such as “Meals on Wheels” and some sort of school-based educational program for students.
