Zoning commission approves ‘data center’ amendments

WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio —The Fayette County Planning Commission met on Sept. 26 at the Evelyn Pentzer Meeting Room to discuss the text of the zoning codes.

The commission was to consider the proposed amendments already approved by the Jefferson Township Zoning Board and the Fayette County Zoning Commission regarding adding “data centers” as an approved use on industrial properties in the county.

After some discussion by the board, county commissioners, and other attendees, both amendments were approved for Fayette County industrial zoning. Their discussions included the long process of going through zoning rules, getting water and power to industrial sites and the benefit to Fayette County for more industrial classifications.

The zoning would still require a data center to be 1,000 feet from any residential property line, a maximum 55 dBA noise level, a buffer around the property – such as trees or privacy fencing — and any outside lighting to face inward toward the buildings so as not to disturb roads or other properties.
