WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, OHIO — “The breezes taste/Of apple peel./The air is full of smells to feel-/Ripe fruit, old footballs,/Burning brush,/New books, erasers,/chalk, and such./The bee, his hive,/well honeyed hum,/and Mother cuts chrysanthemums.”
So evocative of this time of year, these words of John Updike. The mix of sensations – touch, taste, smell – intertwined as they often are. I’m a bit put off by the fact that Mr. Updike references a bee hive as “his” …totally ridiculous. He was often referred to as “sexist,” but he may simply be ignorant in this realm of nature.
It is the season for any final honey harvests if the bees are well stocked for their own winter supplies. Apples vary by type for harvest date, and we expect to experience multiple options from our market apple vendor. We look for apple pies, apple butter, and other apple treats on Fayette County Farmers Market days. And mums! A favorite of market shoppers, these add color and texture when other flowering plants have closed up shop for the year.
This week’s live-music guest, made possible through the sponsorship of the Fayette County Travel & Tourism Bureau, is Jack Fox. Jack’s song list covers several genres from the 40s thru the 80s, including oldies rock, classic rock, pop, country and bluegrass and will be performed from 9-11 a.m.
The market is open Saturday morning from 8:30 to noon. It is located in the municipal parking lot on the corner of South Main and East East streets. SNAP EBT food benefit cards and credit/debit cards are accepted.
