JEFFERSON TWP. — Five people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 71 Thursday, according to authorities, and the driver who allegedly caused the accident fled from the scene.
Shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday, first responders were dispatched to mile marker 66 on I-71 South on the report of an accident, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office accident report. A 2006 Ford Econoline van was traveling south on I-71 and reportedly struck a 2008 Honda Accord in the rear.
The Honda Accord came to rest in the divided median, according to reports. Both vehicles suffered disabling damage.
The identify of the van’s driver, who allegedly fled the scene, is unknown. The van had four other occupants, who were all reported injured and transported to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
The owner of the van is listed on the FCSO report as Lucy Michelle Harrison, of Hamilton.
The driver and only occupant of the Honda Accord was also injured and taken to Grant Hospital in Columbus.
Responders at the scene were Jefferson Township Fire & EMS, Fayette County EMS, Silvercreek Fire & EMS, MedFlight, and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.
