Serving local children through literacy

FAYETTE COUNTY — The United Way of Fayette County brought the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to Fayette County in late 2019. Since then, 491 children have graduated from the program (reached the age of 5) and there are now 1,055 children receiving free quality books in the mail each month.

Children may be signed up at birth and start receiving age appropriate books starting within two months of birth.

Research in child development and the study of thousands of families affirm the benefits of early learning experiences for children, according to United Way. Research shows that activities such as reading regularly with children, beginning with infancy, can produce a significant increase in I.Q.

No system of education alone can ever provide such a dramatic result. Parents are the first and most important teachers their children will ever have. It’s crucial to begin presenting pre-literacy skills at the earliest stages of a child’s life. To better prepare a child for pre-school and kindergarten, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library will provide children an opportunity for greater success, according to United Way.

A strong literacy foundation will help all students in school to be competitive and help strengthen the community. You can sign your child up to receive books at https://imaginationlibrary.com You may also stop by Carnegie Public Library or The United Way and they will assist you in signing up for free books.

“The United Way is the affiliate for Fayette County and therefore is the financial means behind the program in Fayette County,” said Debbie Bryant, president of United Way of Fayette County. “We count on the donations and support from the community to keep this wonderful and worthwhile program alive and well for the future of Fayette County and our children.”

Donations can be mailed to The United Way, 133 S. Main St. Suite 20 Washington CH OH 43160.

“We depend on your support to help us reach our initiative of literacy for our Fayette County children,” said Bryant. “We depend on your support to help us give our children the tools they need to be successful. Thank you for your support and we look forward to your continued support as we serve the children of Fayette County.”
