Asking for help when we need it

0

I am an oldest child and there seem to be tendencies that go with being the first. As long as I can remember I have been slow to ask for help. It might come from the fact that dad would lay out work for my brother and me most days of our summer vacation. It would usually be work that we could get done in the morning, then we could do what we wanted to do the rest of the day.

There were numerous things that needed to be done on a farm so there was no shortage of work. It was in those early days that our work ethic was established for the rest of our lives. The problem was that my brother was slow and we could not do what we wanted to do until the work was done, so I would do most of the work. I couldn’t stand to work at his pace so I just went ahead and did it myself. That created something in me that I have worked my whole life to overcome; “It is just easier to do it myself!”

Nothing could be farther from the truth. It is not that it is easier, the fact is that I don’t have the patience to train someone else to help me out. It seems easier to do it myself but if I taught someone else, we could together get twice as much done. Like 21:19; “In your patience possess your souls.”

Now that I am older I realize this is the thing I need to do but so many times there seems to be no one that notices that I need help.

James 4:2 says; “You do not have because you do not ask.”

This is an absolute truth that is available to us in the Word of God. Even answers to the practical problems that we deal with every day are given to us in the bible. You really can’t expect people to read your mind or see something that they need to do if they have no knowledge of it. When we need help we need to ask. God created us to live in community, not isolation. Community will always benefit us, but we have to work together.

When I ask someone to help me it can give them the satisfaction that they have contributed, and that in itself can bring satisfaction to them. I’m getting better at including others because I am learning that I do not know everything. God has gifted us all with talents and abilities to be used to help one another. “Need Help?” There are people out there that can be a blessing if we would just ask.

These are the every day truths that we look into at the Gathering Place every Wednesday evening at 7 and Sunday morning at 9:30 and 10:30. We have youth group and also recovery group at 6 on Sunday evening. Come and join in.
