What a tiring last two weeks to try to get bowling in with all the snow.
The Sectional tournament, scheduled at Shawnee Lanes in Chillicothe for Feb. 11, ended up taking place on Friday, Feb. 19.
The Washington Blue Lions boys bowling team went into the Sectional tournament with a 3-12 record in the Frontier Athletic Conference.
Notwithstanding, they came together as a team all at once and bowled a great Sectional tournament, according to head coach Buckie Caulley.
Senior Garrett Coy had an amazing third game with a 266.
Senior Owen Mullins had a very strong second game with a 223, followed closely by sophomore Jordan Pottle with a 222.
Junior Drew Ferguson had his high game in game two with a 194. Junior Noah McMurray was consistent all three games with his high game being a 173.
Senior Brock Carter bowled game two and shot a 140 game for the team. Twenty-one teams competed and the Washington Blue Lion boys team finished second.
This second place finish qualified them for the District tournament that was held just days later on Feb. 22.
The boys team had to qualify second to make it to State as a team and fell just short by finishing third. Sophomore Jordan Pottle came out hot, shooting a 245 in game one, followed by a 186 and a 195, giving him a 626 series.
Mullins wasn’t to be outdone, rolling games of 203, 245 and 172, giving him a 620 series.
Fegurson shot his high game of 186 in game two. McMurray’s high game came in game three with a 178.
Coy shot his high game in game one with a 152 and Carter bowled game two and finished with a 142.
“I was very proud how the team came together at the end of the season and gave it a run (to) State as a team,” Caulley said.
The District takes the two top bowlers that had the highest series in the District tournament that did not qualify as a team.
Jordan Pottle’s 626 series made him top qualifier and Owen Mullins’ 620 series made him the second qualifier for the State Tournament that will be held Saturday in Columbus at Wayne Webb’s bowling center.
“I’m very proud of Jordan and Owen for their performance at the Sectional and District tournaments,” Caulley said. “These two are only the second and third to ever to make it to the State Tournament level in the history of Blue Lion bowling (the other being Brandon Underwood).
“These boys put in the practice time to get better and better at the sport,” Caulley said. “I’m very excited to see how they finish at the State tournament. We are going in with the attitude to win, but we are really happy just to make it to this point.”
A very special thank you to Le Ella Lanes bowling center, for allowing the boys and girls team to even get in a season with Covid 19. Ron Amore Jr. and Diane Amore went above and beyond for all Fayette County bowlers to get a safe season in, Caulley said.
