Panthers fall to Cavaliers

CHILLICOTHE — The Miami Trace Panthers were looking to claim a share of first place in the Frontier Athletic Conference when they visited Chillicothe High School to take on the Cavaliers Saturday evening, Jan. 27.

Chillicothe was unbeaten in FAC play, while the Panthers were looking to avenge an earlier 67-43 loss to the Cavs back on Dec. 8.

It turned out to be a tough night for the Panthers as the Cavaliers rolled to an 81-39 victory.

The win improves Chillicothe’s FAC record to 8-0, clinching at least a share of the conference title.

The Panthers, still in second place in the conference, slip to 6-2 in the FAC, 10-8 overall.

Senior Cameron Carter led the Panthers with 11 points and four assists. Senior Darby Tyree scored nine and junior Austin Brown had eight points and led the Panthers with seven rebounds.

Senior Branden Maughmer led the Cavs with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Senior Simon Roderick had 16 points, sophomore Brandon Noel scored nine and sophomore Jayvon Maughmer also scored nine.

It was a great shooting night for Chillicothe and a cold night for the Panthers.

The Cavaliers hit 31 of 51 field goal attempts for 60 percent. Chillicothe made 8 of 21 three-point shots for 38 percent.

The Panthers connected on 14 of 48 field goal attempts for 29 percent. Miami Tace made 3 of 12 three-point shot attempts for 25 percent.

Chillicothe won the rebounding battle, 29-20.

The Cavs had 19 assists to five for Miami Trace and eight steals to three.

Chillicothe had four blocked shots to two for Miami Trace and the Cavs had nine turnovers to 13 for Miami Trace.

Bench points were another factor heavily in favor of Chillicothe, 25 to three.

Points off turnovers were 15 for Chillicothe to four for the Panthers.

Chillicothe led 20-7 at the end of the first quarter and 42-19 at the half.

At the end of three quarters of play, the Cavs were in front, 70-30.

Miami Trace is at home Friday to host Jackson. Fans will want to make sure and be on hand as this will be the final-ever boys basketball game played in the legendary Panther Pit gymnasium.

The Panthers are at Unioto Saturday and will play at Washington High School Saturday, Feb. 10.
