A Staunton home was heavily damaged early Sunday morning by fire, according to the Concord and Green Township Volunteer Fire Department.
A single-family dwelling at 3120 Vine St. caught fire around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. According to the fire chief for Concord and Green, Ralph Stegbauer, the family got out safely, but he said he thinks a cat and a dog perished in the fire.
“There is a lot of damage, but the fire was mostly contained in the back three rooms,” Stegbauer said. “There is a lot of smoke and heat damage, but it was really only in the laundry room, bathroom and kitchen.”
After an investigation of the scene, Stegbauer said that the resident reportedly woke up due to a noise and found the house filled with smoke. Currently the cause is undetermined, but no foul play is suspected.
“The volunteers did excellent,” Stegbauer said. “The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was on the scene first and then we arrived and called (Washington Fire Department) for mutual aide. Washington (Fire Department) was on-site with a tanker and man-power. They did an excellent job also.”
Stegbauer added that all of the responders did their jobs and they were fortunate that the family got out safely.
