Blue Lion soccer wins Sectional title

The Washington High School boys soccer team won a Sectional championship by defeating Zane Trace Thursday night in Kinnikinnick.

Sophomore Blaise Tayese scored both goals for the Lions, and Washington’s senior-led defense earned the shutout.

Tayese nearly scored for Washington ten seconds into the match, stealing a drop ball from kickoff before his shot was parried wide. He sealed the goal six minutes later, scoring on a through ball from junior Eli Ruth.

Tayese scored what would be the game’s final goal on a penalty kick 24 minutes into the first half.

While Zane Trace mounted an offensive surge to finish the half, senior Brian Wilson was able to keep all shots out of the net.

Both teams had opportunities to advance their side in the second half, but no more goals were scored, and the Lions earned the win.

“I’m very proud of the boys,” Washington head coach Aaron Teter said. “We talk about playing fast, about communicating, about how to defend, and about being a team. Tonight it all came together and we beat a strong opponent in Zane Trace.”

Washington will play either South Point or Warren in the District semifinals Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at Logan High School.
