Richard E. Smith, 96, of Washington Court House, Ohio passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at 8:25 a.m. at Carriage Court Assisted Living following a brief illness.

He was born March 6, 1920, in Washington Court House, Ohio to William and Mae Passmore Smith. After spending his primary and elementary years at Sunnyside School, he graduated from Washington High School in 1938. He was a lifelong resident of Fayette County and resided the vast majority of that time at 623 South Main Street.

He proudly served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II and saw action in the European Theatre of Operation.

Mr. Smith was employed by the Dayton Power and Light Company for more than 40 years. He began his work there as a meter reader and retired as a draftsman in the natural gas division.

He was active in the community where he was a member of St. Colman of Cloyne Catholic Church and past commander of Paul H. Hughey Post #25 of the American Legion. He had formerly served as chairman of the Fayette County Democratic Party.

Richard had many fond memories of life, including time with his parents and his favorite uncles, Emmett and John.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Anne Columbo, in 1994.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jean (Howard) Smith; a son, Dr. James Smith, and his wife, Dr. Connie Ruhl-Smith, of Aberdeen, South Dakota.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Dale Reno and the care giving teams at both Carriage Court and Court House Manor for their excellent treatment and guardianship. Richard’s friends, Clyde and Glenda Fyffe, also continued to offer support and loving care throughout his final years, something that Richard and Jean both cherished.

A service will be held Saturday, April 9, 2016, at 3 p.m. at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House with the Rev. Father William Hahn, pastor at St. Colman of Cloyne Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Colman Catholic Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorials may be made to either the St. Colman of Cloyne Catholic Church, 219 South North Street or the First Baptist Church, 301 East East Street of Washington Court House, Ohio 43160.
