Grass fire burns nearly 40 acres

A “nearly out-of-control grass fire” made its way through almost 40 acres of field Wednesday afternoon in Jeffersonville.

The Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department was called out to a report of a grass fire at 2:57 p.m. at 13452 Blessing Chapel Road after a government-run controlled burn “jumped the fire break and caught an adjacent field on fire,” according to authorities.

“There was a government controlled burn that was scheduled for the morning,” said Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Chief Aaron Hauer. “I think with all the wind and the very low humidity, the fire just jumped the fire break and managed to catch this field on fire. We ended up extinguishing around 30 to 40 acres.”

It took nine fire departments, according to Hauer, less than three hours and around 9,000 gallons of water to get the fire under control.

“I want to thank all the departments that came out to assist,” said Hauer. “I really appreciate all their help and I think we did a very good job. Nobody was hurt and we got it under control relatively quickly.”

According to The Weather Channel, the high for today was forecast for 73 degrees. Winds blew out of the south-southwest and there was about 37 percent humidity throughout the day.
