Hi-Y to hold ‘Trick-Or-Can’ on Beggar’s Night

The Hi-Y club at Washington High School is participating in its annual ‘Trick-or-Can” during Beggar’s Night on Thursday, Oct. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Hi-Y club is a community service-based group that motivates and enables high school students to help out their fellow peers, school, and community. Currently, Hi-Y members volunteer to babysit at Head Start and will start to assist at The Well. Hi-Y members enjoy taking up new projects that turn into annual events, which help to raise money or encourage students to give to others.

Past events include Homeless-4-A-Day, where students set up cardboard houses and raise money from passing residents, each May; Youth in Government, a project that enhances development of the American democratic process for young people, every April; and Trick-Or-Can on Beggar’s Night each October.

Trick-Or-Can is a project in which members separate into groups and travel to different neighborhoods around the city; but instead of candy, the participants collect canned goods and non-perishable food items. Beggar’s Night also allows many of the can-collectors to dress-up in festive costumes and show that helping others can be a fun.

Residents who would like to participate in this project are encouraged by Hi-Y to have donations of canned goods and/or non-perishable food items ready when they are stationed to pass out candy. Members will be sure to inform them that they are from Hi-Y when they walk up to the door. All of the collected goods are then taken to the Fayette County Food Pantry at the First Presbyterian Church, where they are sorted and separated for those in need.

“Trick-or-Can has become a Court House tradition over the years that benefits our community,” Hi-Y Teacher Advisor Nick Geruntino said. “It is a time when Hi-Y students put others before themselves on the holiday.”

Help support Hi-Y and those in need by having donations ready for a Hi-Y member to pick up. The group thanks residents for their continued support.
