Deer Creek Daisies enjoy fall season

The look of fall greeted the Deer Creek Daisy Garden Club for their October meeting.

Trees were just beginning to change colors, harvest was in full swing and pumpkins were in abundance at Garringer’s Pumpkin Farm on Old Rte 35 near Jeffersonville. Six members traveled to Caesar Creek Vineyards. One does not think of a winery so close to home.

Located near New Jasper (between Jamestown and Xenia) the family owned business sits on a more than 200 acre farm. Most of the property is planted in corn and soybeans, but the best site for wine grapes was planted in the spring of 2005 with 2.5 acres of new grape seedlings. The vineyard has expanded each year since. There are 12-13 varieties growing now on the site with nearly 5,000 vines in the ground. The last two cold winters have been very hard on the vines and the winery has had to replace many plants.

It can take up to three years to produce ready-to-harvest vines. There are nearly 10 acres now of vines in the ground and they will be adding more in order to expand their selection. The chairman of the enterprise Jean Stuck Monger and general manager (son-in-law) Walter Borda feel their chances of finding the best variety for the property are improved with testing and regular experimentation. It takes up to two months to process the grapes.

The property has a rich and interesting history. Originally the property was part of the Virginia Reservation, which was a four million acre tract of land, reserved by the state of Virginia prior to the Revolutionary War to award soldiers for fighting for the colony of Virginia.

After the revelation, a large tract of land, which included the winery property, was awarded to a Virginia military officer from Tidewater, who subsequently gave various parcels of the original tract to his children. The original deed to the winery property dates back to 1804. The brick and stone settler’s house was built around 1920.

It is scheduled for the significant historic reconstruction and preservation. Caesar Creek flows through the property from time to time.

Caesar Creek Vineyard tasting room has a bright, functional motif designed to convey an industrial, modern feel. It is fully integrated with the adjacent wine making facility. They have a pavilion where customers can congregate and enjoy the day or evening’s weather.

The ladies could see the signs of fall where corn and beans had just been harvested as well as the vines. They schedule private parties and have tasting tours available on weekends. They also schedule live entertainment for patrons’ enjoyment as each sit and visit with a glass of wine or soda during the summer.

After the interesting presentation from employee Trish, hostess Kendra Knecht asked each member present what their favorite part of fall was? All agreed that the seasons changing temperatures and foliage colors were the best. But, of course, pumpkin pie and OSU football also made the list.

Members present were Judy Gentry, Jeanne Miller, Billie Lanman, Rita Lanman, host Joyce Schlichter and Kendra Knecht.
