WHS beats Indians

HILLSBORO – The Washington Blue Lions opened SCOL play for 2015 with a game at Hillsboro Friday night.

It was Homecoming for the Indians.

After the pre-game introduction of the queen and king honorees, the two teams got down to the task at hand.

Washington’s defense played very well in a 22-3 Blue Lion victory.

Washington improved to 2-2 on the season, 1-0 in the SCOL.

Hillsboro dropped to 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the SCOL.

Washington took the opening kickoff down the field and was knocking on the door of the Hillsboro end zone.

However, the drive stalled and Hillsboro took over on downs.

Later in the first quarter, Timothy Robinson had a 44-yard run for a touchdown for the Blue Lions.

Alex Trombold’s kick made it 7-0, Washington at the 3:54 mark of the first quarter.

Later in the first period, a snap over the Hillsboro punter’s head resulted in a safety for Washington and a 9-0 lead.

Shortly after Washington received the ensuing punt from the Hillsboro 20-yard line, a Blue Lion fumble quickly gave the Indians another offensive opportunity.

Midway through the second quarter, C.J. Taylor connected with Eric Barden for what appeared to be a 71-yard touchdown pass play.

That play was called back due to a Washington penalty.

The Blue Lions soon lost their second fumble of the game.

The Indians did manage a 25-yard field goal by Burns with 4:20 to play in the first half.

It was 9-3 Washington at the half.

In the third quarter, Washington scored on a pass to Mason McCane to make it 15-3.

The Blue Lion attempt for the two-point conversion failed.

The Blue Lions scored with 1:28 to play in the game to make what would turn out to be the final, 22-3.

Washington will be at East Clinton next week, while Hillsboro will travel to Wilmington.

Elsewhere around the SCOL, Wilmington (3-1, 1-0) defeated McClain (0-4, 0-1) and Chillicothe (2-2, 1-0) beat East Clinton (2-2, 0-1), 50-7.
