Agronomy Field Day coming Aug. 16

WASHINGTON CH — Fayette County will once again host the Ohio State University Extension Southwest Ohio Corn Growers and Agronomy Field Day coming in August.

A number of speakers will converge Aug. 16 from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Fayette County Airport and demonstration farm, 2770 State Route 38 in Washington C.H., to help and inform growers of the many facets of farming corn. Admission is free to most of the events throughout the day with other attractions going on that will entertain visitors for a price.

“We try to provide information to farmers to help them run their farms,” said Ron Rockhold, board member of the SW Corn Growers. “We have been doing this since 1983 and it has been held in Fayette County for a few years now. The county is centralized for the group in the Southwest Corn Growers. We service Madison, Greene, Clinton, Highland, Pickaway, Ross and Fayette and are members of the Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers as well as the national corn growers group.”

The topics and speakers vary and include (from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.) keynote speaker, Gary Schnitkey, Ag. Economist, University of Illinois-Farm Outlook 2016/2017; “Spray Tip Selection” by Erdal Ozkan, The Ohio State University; “Sprayer Management and In Field Demonstration” by Ozkan; “Cover Crop Demonstration” by Jay Brandt, Walnut Creek Seeds; “Variable Rate Nutrient Management” by Tim Norris, CEO of Ag Info Tech; Dow Agro-Sciences LLC” Enlist Research and Demonstration by Dave Hillger, Dow AgroSciences LLC and an OCGA Update by Tadd Nicholson, OCGA Executive Director.

From 2 – 4 p.m., a precision ag. technology session will be held and will cover variable rate technology, aerial mapping, nitrogen sensor and other hot topics. Tim Norris, CEO of Ag Info Tech and Andy Klopfensten, The Ohio State University, will be leading.

All day events include: corn and soybean show plots, two $500 gift certificate drawings for Ohio Corn Grower members, trade show, plane rides from FCA Flight Training that are $30 per person for a 30-minute flight (Must register at 740-335-2430, payment in cash or check made to FCA Flight Training), health screenings in the morning (please fast prior for blood testing) and CCA Credits will be offered.

Finally, in the evening, the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce “Business after Hours” will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. and the Fayette County Farm Bureau and Fayette Soil & Water Conservation District will hold its annual meetings. Voting for Soil & Water Conservation District directors will be available from 9 a.m. to noon, and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. A banquet will begin at 6 p.m. with business meetings to follow. Cost is $10 per person.
