Panthers knock off Massie, 7-1

The Miami Trace varsity baseball team picked up its best win of the season Friday evening over a very good Clinton-Massie team.

Trevon Burnside pitched a complete game, one-hitter, as the Panthers beat the Falcons, 7-1.

Clinton-Massie came into the game with a record of 20-1.

Massie is now 11-2 in the SCOL with a game remaining against Wilmington (12-1) on Sunday. The Hurricane clinched at least a share of the SCOL title with the Panthers defeating Clinton-Massie.

Burnside (6-3) allowed one run (it was earned) with eight strikeouts and five walks.

“In his losses, he’s been wild with his control,” Miami Trace head coach Rob Smith said. “Tonight, he had one bad inning, but he regained his focus and got out of it.

“I have to give our kids credit,” Smith said. “They played a great defensive game.” The Panthers had just one error.

“All nine guys played great defense,” Smith said.

Noah Greathouse started and took the loss for the Falcons.

He pitched four innings with seven hits and seven run (all earned) with 10 strikeouts and three walks.

Leforge worked an inning for Massie, with one hit and three strikeouts and Perkins pitched one inning with one hit allowed and one strikeout.

Richardson had the one base hit for the Falcons.

Miami Trace is now 9-5 in the SCOL, 15-6 overall.

The Panthers scored one run in the first and led 1-0 after three innings.

Massie scored its lone run in the top of the fourth.

Miami Trace answered with six runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Leading hitters for Miami Trace include Trenton Harris, who went 2 for 3, scoring twice and driving in one; Mitchell Creamer was 2 for 3 with a triple and a run scored and Jacob Batson was 2 for 3 with two rbi and one run scored.

In the first inning, Harris doubled to lead off the inning.

Brady Wallace drew a one-out walk and then the Panthers executed a double steal; Wallace stealing second and Harris stealing home.

Massie scored with three consecutive walks and a wild pitch in the top of the fourth.

In the fourth for Miami Trace, Creamer led off with a double.

Skylar McDonald singled, scoring Creamer with what proved to be the winning run.

Coby Hughes singled and Jacob Batson followed with a single that scored McDonald and Hughes to make it 4-1.

Heath Cockerill walked and Harris singled, scoring Batson.

Josh Morton got in on the action with a single that scored Cockerill.

“From the beginning of the season, we knew that we were a team that would get better and better as the year went on,” Smith said. “We’re peaking at the right time. We’ve played well this week. It was a great win for us.”

Smith also said that the Panthers are hoping to pick up a game next week prior to the tournament game against the Washington Blue Lions on Thursday (at Miami Trace).
