The Washington Blue Lions varsity baseball team opened the 2016 season with a game on the road at Southeastern High School near Chillicothe.

The Blue Lions won the game, 8-3.

Senior Jordan Flowers started on the mound and picked up the win for the Blue Lions.

He pitched six innings, allowing three runs (none earned) on six hits. He walked one and struck out five.

Cole Massie pitched one scoreless inning in relief, with one hit and one walk.

Dye started and took the loss for Southeastern. He allowed six runs on six hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out four.

Diehl pitched two innings, with two runs, one walk and three strikeouts.

“We started the season off with a nice win,” Washington head coach Tyler Rhodus said. “Jordan Flowers pitched six very solid innings for us. He was super efficient, walking only one while striking out five.

“I thought we had better at-bats today than we have previously in our scrimmage, but, we still have a ways to go,” Rhodus said. “I was pleased with our base running and it is still getting better.

“All-in-all, we saw a lot of good things and a few things we need to continue to get better at,” Rhodus said.

The Blue Lions began the game with three runs in the top of the first.

It was still a 3-0 game heading into the top of the third, where the Blue Lions tacked on two more.

That was a good thing, because Southeastern posted three runs in the bottom of the third.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Washington scored one in the fifth and, after a scoreless sixth inning, the Blue Lions put two more on the board in the top of the seventh.

The Blue Lions had six hits and three errors, while Southeastern had seven hits and committed five errors.

Caden Cluxton went 2 for 4 with a stolen base and two runs scored for Washington.

Tim Robinson went 2 for 2 with a double, a stolen base, one RBI and three runs scored.

Cole Massie had one hit and two RBI and Brian Wilson had two RBI.

The Blue Lions are at home Tuesday to take on Circleville at 5 p.m.
