The Miami Trace Panthers hosted quarterfinal matches in the Regional wrestling dual team tournament Wednesday evening.

Other teams taking part were Bellbrook, Clinton-Massie and Unioto.

In the first two matches, Clinton-Massie took on Bellbrook, while at the same time, Miami Trace wrestled Unioto.

The Falcons defeated Bellbrook, 60-18 and Miami Trace beat Unioto, 54-13.

After a 20-minute break, it was time for the finals.

In a close match between SCOL rivals, Miami Trace beat Clinton-Massie, 39-31.

That match started with the Panthers giving up 12 points at 106 and 113 pounds.

Miami Trace began the comeback with pins by Wes Gandee (120) and Coby Hughes at 126.

Miami Trace got decisions by Gavin Moore at 132 and Bladeth Leamon at 138.

Clinton-Massie halted that momentum with pins by Christian Poynter at 145 and Davey Tunon at 152.

Austin Lovett won his match for the Panthers at 160 pounds.

Anthony Tissandier of Clinton-Massie won his match at 170 pounds to give the Falcons a 28-21 lead with four weight classes remaining.

Senior Matthew Hottinger stemmed the tide for the Panthers with a pin midway through the third period, making it a 28-27 score in favor of the Falcons.

Jared Fenner picked up a pin for the Panthers at 195.

Massie’s Jackson Grigsby won at 220 and Panther heavyweight Colin Wolffe won by forfeit, giving the Panthers the 39-31 win.

“The first time we wrestled Clinton-Massie, they had a kid out of the line-up and we had a few more kids in the line-up,” Miami Trace head coach Ben Fondale said. “This is a pretty good feeling. We’re just taking this one dual at a time.

“Last year, the team fell short of making it to St. Johns,” Fondale said. “This team wants to accomplish something last year’s team was not able to do.”

The wins Wednesday set up a dual match with the Washington Blue Lions on Feb. 3 (the site is to be announced).

In the other half of that bracket, New Richmond will take on Western Brown.

Miami Trace will be right back in action Saturday with the Miami Trace/McDonald’s Invitational beginning at 10 a.m.

“We have 13 teams coming in,” Fondale said. “Our goal is to obviously win the tournament. We want to get at least five guys in the finals. We have some guys that have been tournament runners-up. We want to get them tournament victories. At some point, they’re going to have to beat some good kids. We might as well start on Saturday. We’re hoping to get a few champions this weekend.”
