Lady Panther 7th, 8th grade basketball tips-off season against Greenfield, Chillicothe

The Miami Trace 7th and 8th grade girls basketball teams kicked off their season on Monday, Dec. 7 in Greenfield.

The seventh grade girls had a back and forth contest from the get-go.The Panthers took the first quarter 9-7. The second quarter was a duel, with it being 16-16. As the third quarter ended, Greenfield threw up a half court shot that went in to put them up 23-22.

The Panthers and Tigers kept exchanging baskets, but the Tigers took the win 33-28.

Olivia Fleihman was the leading scorer for the Panthers with 10 points. Gracee Stewart had eight and Keyaira Helton chipped in six points.

The eighth grade Lady Panthers took a 13-10 lead over the Tigers in the first quarter. Shooting was cold for both teams in the second quarter, but the Panthers held onto an 18-14 lead at halftime.

Greenfield threw up a half-court shot at the buzzer that signaled the end of the third quarter, like in the seventh grade game, to put them down by one, 24-23. The Panthers went on an 11-4 run in the fourth quarter to take home the victory, 35-27.

Shaylee McDonald led the Lady Panthers with 24 points. Morgan Eggleton had six points, Aubrey Schwartz three points, and Aubrey McCoy chipped in two.

On Wednesday, Dec. 10, the Panthers hosted the Chillicothe Lady Cavaliers. The first quarter was cold shooting with a score of 4-4.

Chillicothe took the lead at half time of 14-11.

Both teams came out fighting in the third quarter but the Cavaliers were still in the lead 21-19. In the fourth quarter, the teams traded baskets, but the Lady Cavs took home the win, 32-28.

Olivia Fleihman and Gracee Stewart led the team with six points each.

Keyaira Helton had five, Ella Coe four, and Aubrey Wood and Gabby McCord chipped in two points each.

In eighth grade action, it started out in a defensive battle with the Cavaliers up 6-5 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter the Cavs went on a 12-2 run to put them up 24-7 at halftime.

The Panthers couldn’t get much going, and were still down 32-11 at the end of three. Cold shooting continued in the last quarter for the Lady Panthers, falling 42-16.

Shaylee McDonald led with 12 points and Morgan Eggleton and Aubrey McCoy each chipped in a basket.

The girls will be back in action Wednesday at home against Hillsboro. The seventh grade game starts first at 5 p.m.
