Three-point field goals lift McClain past Lady Lions

GREENFIELD — It was a tough, physical game at McClain High School Wednesday between the Lady Tigers and the visiting Washington Lady Blue Lions in an SCOL match-up.

McClain won the game with its three-point shooting, sinking nine treys to one for Washington as the Lady Tigers prevailed, 43-35.

McClain freshman Maddy Stegbauer hit four threes (two in both halves) on her way to a game-high 16 points.

Junior Malea Montavon sank three threes on her way to scoring 11 points for McClain.

For the Lady Lions, freshman Hannah Haithcock led with 13 points.

Senior Wendy Hawk was next with six points.

Washington bolted out to a 10-3 lead on McClain in the first five minutes of play.

With three of their five first quarter field goals being threes, McClain was able to fight back and take a 13-12 lead at the end of the first period.

Washington scored 13 points in the second quarter, while McClain hit three threes for nine points. As the teams broke for the locker room at the half, Washington held a 25-22 lead.

McClain outscored Washington 10-6 in the third quarter to take a 32-31 lead. The Lady Tigers hit two more threes in the third quarter.

McClain outscored Washington 13-4 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the 43-35 victory.

“It was such a physical ball game,” Washington head coach John Persinger said. “We just have trouble matching being physical inside.

“We had plenty of shots inside that just didn’t fall,” Persinger said. “We make those and we’re looking at a different outcome.”

A look at the unofficial shooting stats finds the two teams both shooting a cool 29 percent from the field.

McClain made 16 of 56 shot attempts and Washington was 14 of 48 from the field.

As noted above, the difference of 24 points in the amount of points scored from three-point field goals was what won it for McClain. The Lady Tigers scored 27 points on threes to just three points from behind the arc for Washington.

“We weren’t expecting little No. 24 (Stegbauer) to do that,” Persinger said of McClain’s leading scorer who hit four threes on her way to leading the game in scoring with 16 points.

“Jarrod (Haines, McClain’s head coach) did a nice job with his team,” Persinger said.

“Hats off to Coach Persinger and Court House,” Haines said. “Whatever we didn’t get, it was because of them. The reason we came out flat was because of them.

“Maddy Stegbauer and Malea Montavon, those two put us on their backs,” Haines said. “And Sara Bennett hit a huge shot for us. We had to live on the outside.

“And that just continued in the second half,” Haines said of his team’s outside shooting success. That’s what we need. Malea was very confident this evening. When we needed a big rebound, she was there.

“Defensively, we had no intensity,” Haines said. “We were just flat. But in the second half, that picked up a lot.”

McClain’s post player, Beth Montgomery, was scoreless in the first half.

She was challenged at the half, according to Haines and responded with eight points in the second half which was the final margin of victory for McClain.

Washington (now 2-4 overall, 2-3 in the SCOL) will host Hillsboro Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Hillsboro lost to Miami Trace Wednesday night, 66-37.

McClain (now 5-1 overall, 3-1 in the SCOL) will travel to East Clinton Saturday for a noon tip-off of the j-v game.
