Lady Lions fall to Falcons in Sectional

LANCASTER — The Washington Lady Blue Lion varsity softball team was the No. 6 seed in the Sectional tournament.

On Wednesday, Washington traveled to No. 3 seed Fairfield Union to open the tournament.

Fairfield Union won, 12-1 in five innings.

Fairfield Union scored one run in the bottom of the third.

Washington responded in the top of the fourth with a home run by Maddy Jenkins.

Fairfield Union scored seven in the fourth and four more in the fifth to invoke the 10-run rule, ending the game.

Brooklyn Devenport had two hits for Washington.

She also took the loss in the circle, pitching 4.1 innings with 11 hits and 12 runs (eight earned) with one strikeout and two walks.

L. Teasley hit two home runs for Fairfield Union, including a grand slam, and drove in six runs. She was also the winning pitcher for the Falcons. She pitched five innings with three hits and one earned run allowed. She struck out 11 and walked two.

Washington finishes the 2018 season with a record of 7-14 overall, 4-6 in the FAC.

The Lady Lions made tremendous strides this year after going 1-19 in 2017.

Maddy Jenkins was named First Team, All-FAC for 2018 and will be among the student-athletes recognized at the conference’s spring sports banquet on May 21.

In other Division II Sectional tournament games Wednesday, Circleville beat Miami Trace, 22-12 in six innings; Waverly defeated Athens, 11-1 in five innings. Waverly will face Circleville next.

New Lexington beat McClain, 2-0 and Jackson trounced Vinton County, 19-0 in five innings. Jackson will meet New Lexington on May 15.

Warren beat Chillicothe, 7-2. Warren will take on Fairfield Union on May 14.

Sheridan edged Logan Elm, 6-5 in eight innings.

Gallia Academy blanked Unioto, 10-0. Gallia Academy will play Sheridan on May 14.
