PORTSMOUTH — Washington High School’s Anna Nestor and Megan Downing have advanced out of the Sectional tennis tournament and on to next week’s District tournament.

Seeded No. 2, they were the only one of the top four-seeded doubles teams to advance.

They first beat Circleville, 6-0, 6-0 and then beat Miami Trace’s Whitney Cockerill and Maddi Wallace, 6-0, 6-0.

Those victories advanced them to the quarterfinals where they beat Marietta, 6-1, 6-1 to secure a spot in the District tournament.

In the semifinals, Nestor and Downing beat a team from Unioto, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the finals.

Out of 32 doubles teams, they are now set to play a team from Logan Elm for the Sectional championship Thursday.

Mackenzie Cress lost 0-6, 0-6 to Athens in the first round.

Jen Richards at second singles won her first round match 6-0, 6-4 against Circleville.

The second round match against Athens was postponed until Thursday due to rain.

Yui Kobayashi lost her first round match 0-6, 0-6 against Logan Elm.

Sierra Dawson and Maria Pickerill won their first round match against Marietta, 6-0, 6-2.

However, they lost to Miami Trace’s Bethany Reiterman and Haylee Higgins in the second round, 6-4, 5-7, 0-6.

“They played some of their best tennis in that first set,” Washington head coach Mitch Augenstein said.

Miami Trace’s Higgins and Reiterman have also advanced to the District tournament next week.

The Division II Sectional tennis tournament will be played Wednesday, Oct. 7 beginning at 10 a.m. at Ohio University in Athens.

Please see an upcoming edition of the Record-Herald for a report on how all the players from Miami Trace fared at the Sectional tournament.
