FCS Crusades wrap up season

The Fayette Christian School Crusaders boys basketball team finished the 2017-18 season by participating in a double elimination tournament at Emmanuel Baptist Academy in Lebanon.

In the opener, the Crusaders defeated Royalmont, 60-49.

The team shot 42 percent from the field and outscored their opponents 11 to 1 from the free throw line.

Noah Gibbs led the team with a 22 point performance scoring 10 in the final quarter of play that helped the Crusaders in a 16-9 advantage that period.

Nicholas Epifano added 13 points (including four 3s), Lane Hufford had 12 and Aaron Turner scored 10 points. Spencer Hanusik added a free throw.

The win put the Crusaders in the winner’s bracket quarterfinals against the host Emmanuel Baptist basketball team.

Crusaders hurt themselves with 22 turnovers which Emmanuel converted into 18 points in their 47-39 win.

For the local Crusaders, Nicholas Epifano led the team with 13 points, Noah Gibbs scored 11 points and Aaron Turner added 10. Spencer Hanusik scored three points and Lane Hufford added two.

The loss dropped the Crusaders to the consolation round where they met Cozzadale Baptist for the third time this seaeon. The teams spilt their regular season meetings.

The Chargers took a 33-30 lead going into the final period which saw Nathan Middleton scoring eight of his 12 points including six in a row as Cozzadaale went on to defeat Fayette Christian, 50-44.

Nicholas Epfano had a career high 25 points including 15 of the team’s 21 first half points.

Noah Gibbs chipped in 10 points (all in the second half). Lane Hufford added seven and Spencer Hanusik finished with two points. Aaron Turner didn’t score but led the team with nine rebounds.

Noah Gibbs and Nicholas Epifano were later named to the All Tournament team.

The local Crusaders finished the season at 7-9. They will lose seniors Noah Gibbs and Aaron Turner due to graduation.
